St John of God

Saint John of God Hospitaller Services Malawi (SJOG) was founded in 1992 by the Irish Order of Saint John of God in Malawi and has been registered since 1994 as a national non-governmental organization under the Companies Act 1984 (11484) and with the Malawi NGO Regulation Authority (NGO/L/24/013) and the Council for Non-Governmental Organization of Malawi (C1220/2018). SIOG's work aims to guarantee the right to adequate care for children and adults with disabilities and mental illness through community-based care and support services. SJOG began its work by setting up psychiatric outpatient clinics and is now the leading non-governmental provider of psychiatric and psychosocial services in Malawi. Among other things, the NGO runs two clinics (in Mzuzu and Lilongwe), 15 psychological counselling centres, an inpatient addiction treatment programme in Lilongwe and a college (College of Health Sciences; courses include BSc in Psychiatry and Psychosocial Care).
